Symbols and Abbreviations

The following symbols and abbreviations have been used throughout this guide:

Recommended

This climb is worth doing.*

Sport

This climb is a "sport route" and can be led entirely on fixed protection (in some cases belays may still require natural gear).

Warning

This climb is more dangerous than your typical route. Take care!
Routes marked with this symbol will usually be safe to top rope.

BR

Bolt Runner. Requires a portable hanger or bolt bracket to use.

PR

Piton Runner. A piton driven into a crack or weakness in the rock.

FH

Fixed Hanger. A bolt with a hanger permanently fixed to it.

RB

Ring Bolt. A single piece bolt manufactured into a ring.

BB

Belay Bolt. A BR placed at the top of the climb. Usually placed in pairs. Requires a portable hanger or bolt bracket to use.

FA

First Ascent. The first ascent of the route.

FFA

First Free Ascent. The first free ascent of the route (did not involve aid).

FTRA

First Top Rope Ascent. The first free ascent of the route, done on top rope.

FRA

First Recorded Ascent. The first recorded ascent of the route.

(B)

Added to the end of a crag name to indicate that it's exclusively a bouldering area.

* Note that in assigning stars to climbs I've tended to be a bit ruthless. I've only given a route a star if it would warrant one at other, more classic climbing areas (primarily by comparing to the Blue Mountains).
 
So just because a route doesn't get a star, don't assume it's not worth doing. In the context of the crag, it could well be a classic (although if it were located at Mt Piddington, it would probably be relatively worthless). In any event, many of these ratings are just the opinion of one or two climbers who probably don't share the same climbing interests as you.
